In a working lifetime, I have been an Industrial Designer, Art College lecturer, Artist Blacksmith and writer. I still design, teach, write and make things in hot metal. I am not looking for work, so this website simply records some of the work I have done, in case anyone is curious.
I studied Industrial Design at the Royal College of Art in London and worked as a designer in the Architect's Department of London Transport, during the design stage of the Victoria Line. I later I worked as an industrial designer with the Allied Ironfounders group, before becoming a part-time Lecturer at Guildford School of Art. Guildford School later amalgamated with Farnham College of Art, where I became a full time Senior Lecturer.
In 1979 and 1980 I discovered blacksmithing, took part in two pivotal Crafts Council Conference and Workshop events at Hereford and gained practical experience in Richard Quinnell's workshop in Leatherhead, Surrey. I then set up a BA(Hons) Metals course, in what was at that time West Surrey College of Art and Design, now the University College for the Creative Arts. This course originally comprised studies in Jewellery, Silversmithing, Blacksmithing and Foundry work.
In 1992, I resigned my teaching post, to set up my own artist blacksmithing business , which has involved me ever since. I taught part-time for year or so at Hereford College of Art, and later became External Examiner on their BA(Hons) Artist Blacksmithing course, and later a Fellow of the College. I taught blacksmithing short courses in Penland School of Crafts, North Carolina and for many years at the Richard Quinnell School in Leatherhead, Surrey. Teaching blacksmithing encouraged me to write about the craft, see below.
Over the years, I have judged ironwork competitions in Britain; Aachen,Germany; Stia, Italy ; and Smedjebacken, Sweden, and delivered lectures on forged metalwork in America, Belgium, Britain and Italy. I write regularly for Artist Blacksmith magazine, the journal of the British Artist Blacksmiths Association, BABA
Now retired, we moved to the far west of Cornwall in 2015. Here I have small forge workshop, where I make small pieces for gallery sale. I still teach short courses at West Dean College, West Sussex.
